 At 70 years of age she counts herself lucky, more so than when she was a child living in poverty. Aquilina de la Paz Reyes gave birth to five children in the Dominican Republic, and they all emigrated to Spain. Now she wants for nothing, she told IPS. Every month she receives money to cover all her expenses.

Deadlock in Latin America UN race by BBC

Voting in the fierce battle for one of Latin America’s UN Security Council seats will go into a second day after delegates failed to end a deadlock.

After 10 rounds of voting neither of the leading nations, Guatemala and Venezuela, emerged as the victor in the election for the temporary seat.

Ebon Dooley Passes Away

The Latin American and Caribbean Community Center and Radio Diaspora is saddened to announce that Ebon Dooley, Broadcast Director of WRFG 89.3 FM has passed away.

Ebon was an integral force for the creation and development of the Latin American and Caribbean Community Center.  He provided us with his political and organizing experience and contacts, and is really one of the reasons why this organization continues to exist. 

Ebon was not only integral to the African American community, he also fought arduosly for the rights of migrant communities since he was a teenage cotton picker.  Ebon you will be missed.

NEBAJ, Guatemala — A decade after the conclusion of the long civil war that ravaged this Central American nation, Guatemalans are literally trying to dig up their past.

Spurred by a surge of requests from victims’ families this year, dozens of forensic anthropologists have been fanning out across the countryside to search for remains of the 200,000 people — most of them Mayan Indian civilians — who were killed or abducted during the 36-year conflict.

Following an incident-free visit by Haitian policemen to the capital’s most notorious slum, a senior police officer said Wednesday it was the first step towards re-opening a base there.
On Tuesday, dozens of heavily armed policemen toured run-down Cite Soleil, shaking hands and chatting with residents in what they hoped was a gesture of friendship. (more…)

While politicians from across the political spectrum and editorial pages throughout the United States have been taking their shots at Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez since his now infamous ‘’devil'’ comment at the United Nations, no one is asking what made him so mad. Seats are getting crowded on the anti-Chávez bandwagon as retailer 7-Eleven announced it will drop Venezuelan-owned Citgo gasoline from its 2,100 service stations in the United States in protest and Florida lawmaker Rep. Adam Hasner has called for Citgo to be kicked off of the state’s turnpike. (more…)

Por el momento, la campaña sostenida en radio, televisión, prensa, grafitis, pancartas y hasta estribillos de barras bravas futboleras tiene dos ejes: desprestigiar al enemigo Evo Morales mostrándolo inútil; y luego escenificar un clima de inestabilidad política y social en el país.
