Mr. Fletcher rails against the biased American media, but his treatise here is no different. His sympathetic portrayal of the FARC and Hugo Chavez makes me sad. What motive would the Colombian government have to disrupt negotiations to free Ingrid Betancourt if they were proving fruitful? Instead of impuning nefarious motives on President Uribe, Mr. Fletcher could offer solutions. The Colombian government is trying to solve an intractable problem. The Colombian people want peace. My husband is from Colombia and his family would like the freedom to travel where they want, when they want, in their own country without worrying for their physical safety. They would like to know that their children will be safe as they grow up and become adults. Sympathizing with the FARC will only feed the beast. I don't know the answers to the crisis in Colombia, but I do believe that President Uribe loves his country and is trying to protect his people from brutality.
